"A Sista Can't Get No Love???"

So I was shuffling through the ipod again & came across one of Kelly Rowland's songs called 'Every Time You Walk Out That Door'; which is considerably a decent song. But it got me wondering why is it that Kelly can't get her props in the US? OK it's a given that in comparison to her girl Beyonce her talent can easily get drowned out by all the glitz & the over exaggerated ad libs. But come on the girl still has talent. She's a great singer & I'll be the first to say that vocally she's better than Bee on any given day. The difference between the two? Beyonce captivates her audience with her loud & boisterous voice & is a dynamic performer; her stage presence exudes confidence. Kelly has dynamic range & vocals she just rarely displays them, I think she sometimes looses focus while performing & falls back into the mindset of the girl group days and as a solo artist you have to be able to distinguish the two.

Which brings me back to my point...Ms. Kelly has been going full throttle in the UK lately. In fact the majority of her fan base resides there (seriously). Kelly's debut album 'Simply Deep' was nominated as the best-selling solo debut in 2002, sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and debuted @ #1 in the UK and Australia. I've seen more & more artist headline tours overseas because the fan base there is so loyal. So has the US abandoned our own artists? Or is it that the content they're selling is just more popular else where?

I think the U.S. always make a competition out of things instead of letting each artist shine in their own right. Kelly IS a better singer than Beyonce. Listen to their first and second cd...Kelly was killing the vocals.

I have a questions; if Kelly turned solo before Beyonce', do you think the trend would be the same regarding her being second in sales etc.? I don't think so. From the beginning Sasha has been manufactured to be in front and Kelly was always the loyal background singer/second best. Kelly better build up her confidence and hit this game hard! Beyonce'received her claim to fame from being a member of Destiny's Child...a group they both were members of.

I agree with you @ A.Red when you said the US makes it about competition.

Not that it's right but light complected female singers get WAY more shine and exposure in the states as opposed to brownskinned sisters. I think Brandy was the darkest out of the pack of young female singers and even then she didn't get as accepted in the POP region that Beyonce has.

Beyonce's performance game is phenomenal but at the same time, her look is more accepted - not to say there's anything wrong with Kelly 'cause I think she's beautiful.

Another thing is that Beyonce's family machine has always been behind her more so the other girls. She's always been in the middle, always been the one highlighted, which offered her more exposure. It's a dirty game.

I don't know if Kelly can revamp the situation and STILL be herself.

Well I'm a proud Bey 'stan', so I in no way think Kelly is more talented. I don't even think it's close. But I'm biased. I heart Bey. Anywho, Kelly is very talented though. I don't know why she doesn't get support. I got her last record, I've heard much worse.

Hey Kitty, Thanks 4 Dropping Through...

I love Bee too but I gotta stand by my word I think Kelly has the better vocals. Beyonce's just more marketable...But it's really hard to compare the two...

I had this conversation with a friend of mine a few years ago, and my two cents was that Kelly does have better vocals & lyrical subject matter, but Bey does have more of a stage presence, Kelly needs to work on that aspect. But in the US she will never surpass the Beyonce jauggernaut, the marketing machine of the Knowles is a force to be reckoned with, us Americans are a sucker for clever marketing... un/fortunately that is the Americam way...
